New Alpha Course starts 9 January

Alpha is a low-pressure, fun and informative course. It is a place to relax, share your thoughts and explore the meaning of life. And it’s is designed primarily for people who don't go to church, but are interested in the Christian faith.

And the next one on Clapham is taking place at The Sun Pub, Clapham Old Town, tomorrow, Monday 9 January, for 7 weeks. We kick off at 8pm and finish no later than 9.30pm. We’ve normally served supper at Holy Trinity before hand but here’s an opportunity to tuck into some of the lovely food at The Sun and make you way upstairs ready to begin at 8pm prompt.

What happens?

Over 7 evenings we’ll take a look at some of life’s Big Questions. After a short talk we’ll split into groups and grab an opportunity, rarely offered, to lift the lid on issues maybe you haven’t had the chance to talk through.

Just remember. No question is too daft and no comment too stupid.

Bell Ringing

Bell ringers wanted. Bell ringing is a good recreation but also part of our ministry, since it calls people to worship and reminds them of the Church's presence. If you would be interested in learning this traditional skill, please come up to the ringing room in the gallery before one of the 10.00 am Sunday services, to see what we do: or speak to Madeline Johnston (020 8675 7916) or Peter Jefferson Smith (020 7622 8285). Christingle Service - 24th December 5pm

The Children’s Society first introduced Christingle to The Church of England in 1968, and it has since become one of the most popular events for families and communities in the church calendar.

Loved by children and adults alike, this candlelit celebration is an ideal way to share the key messages of Christmas and Christianity, while helping to raise vital funds to help vulnerable children across the country.

The celebration

At Holy Trinity we celebrate with carols, a Nativity performance and a collection in aid of The Children’s Society. The main element that is universal to all Christingle celebrations is the lighting of Christingle candles.

Helping vulnerable children

The Children’s Society relies on the vital funds raised through Christingle celebrations to fund their work with vulnerable children and young people in our community and across the country.

Symbolism

The orange – represents the world
The red ribbon – indicates the love and blood of Christ
The dried fruits and sweets – symbols of God’s creations
The lit candle – symbolises Jesus, the light of the world

Please join us to make the Christingle candles 10 o'clock to 12 o'clock on Saturday 24th December.
Children will rehearse the Nativity at 10.30am.
The service itself will start at 5pm.

Christmas Fayre

On Saturday 10th December, 10am-3pm, Holy Trinity Clapham will be hosting South London’s only Green & Ethical Christmas Fayre. The fair will be opened by Kate Hoey MP and will have stalls selling fairly traded, green, and ethical gifts, organic food and recycled wrapping. Get on your bike for our pedal-powered music centre, listen to live festive music as you browse and join in festive activities including Father Christmas’ grotto and beeswax candle making. The Green Café will be open for light lunch, tea, coffee and delicious cakes when you need a break.

This exciting new event is being organised by the Environment Group and aims to raise awareness of environmental issues within our community and to raise funds for work to improve energy efficiency in the Church. There is a demand in the area for information and advice about tackling climate change and we are hoping to hold more events to promote specific aspects of environmentally sustainable living. Within the church we are hoping to raise funds to insulate the roof of the church and foil back our radiators to reduce heat loss in the building.

All the enterprises taking part will fit our criteria to be ethically responsible and we are particularly welcoming those which promote environmentally sustainable living.
When you’re finished inside, pop out to the Big Green Bus for storytelling and some extra eco-info. You can also buy your British Christmas Tree in the churchyard from the Macaulay School Christmas Tree Sale.

The children's choir will be singing for the service this Sunday, November 27. The rehearsal will be at 9:30 am before the service at 10am.

The choir will sing at the Christmas Carols and Readings service on December 18 at 6pm. We field our biggest choir of the year for this service and there are many singers who only join up for this service. If you are thinking of joining the choir, this is an ideal time.
We have a note learning practice for this service on Monday, December 12 at 7:30pm, a second practice on Saturday, December 17 at 9:15 am. The carol service starts at 6pm on December 18 and the choir need to arrive by 3:45pm for a final rehearsal.

Come and join our friendly choir which operates under the musical direction of Antony Le Fleming. We perform a wide range of sacred music from Tallis, Bach, Mozart, Wesley, Chilcote, Rutter, Le Fleming through to spirituals.

Our choir is for singers of any ability and there is no audition. Although, as the rehearsal schedule is quite limited and there is a lot of music to get through, sight singing ability or willingness to learn is greatly valued. Currently the membership of the choir is varied, we have professional musicians, very experienced amateurs, newcomers to Church music and those returning to singing after a very long break.

We sing at the 10am service usually 3 Sundays per month with some extra services. For example, recently, James MacMillan visited Holy Trinity Clapham and the choir performed his work "A New Song" in a special service. Rehearsals are for an hour before the service and there is usually one extra rehearsal per month on a weekday evening. The complexity of the pieces performed largely depends on who is available to sing for the service, so we can challenge experienced singers as well as catering for those with less experience (for whom special introductory ‘how to read music’ sessions can also be made available, as required).

We are keen to hear from singers who are looking to join a Church and who will try to sing most Sundays. However, we appreciate that everyone is busy and there is no pressure to sing every Sunday. We'd also like to hear from those who could help out occasionally as we draft in extra voices for special occasions.

November's Connect Service welcomes Olivia Kilbee. Olivia works with The Nehemiah Project, a local charity that works with men who want to leave behind their lives of addiction, violence and crime. They have achieved extraordinary results through their work in prison and in providing supported housing that helps bridge the gap between prison and independent living. Some of the money raised at The Common Fayre is given to this charity.

Green and Ethical Christmas Fayre - Update 13 November

Saturday 10 December, 10am-3pm, here at Holy Trinity while Macaulay School PTA hold their Christmas Tree sale outside.

We still need lots of volunteers to help in some way on the day - can you spare an hour or two? There are sign up sheets in the lobby today. We aim to raise awareness of environmental issues within our community and to raise funds for important work to improve energy efficiency in the Church.

Father Christmas’ Workshop Susan Wright has volunteered to prepare and decorate the workshop but Father Christmas would like someone organised to plan and manage the details of his visit, organising stewards and time slots for the children to see him. This requires advance planning, and active management on the day! And we need a couple of Chief Elves to help on the day. If you are inspired to help with this, please talk to Anna Post or Rachel Chetwood,

Green Café Caroline Pook is co-ordinating this, and needs cooks to prepare savouries, cakes and other food (organic, fair trade or local ingredients, please!).

Food Stall John Harvey will be selling home made fudge, Christmas puddings, Jams, etc, made using ethical ingredients, of course. Contributions welcome.

Gift Wrap Tolu Odeyemi has volunteered to run the Stall selling recycled wrapping paper, and providing a wrapping service for gifts bought at the Fayre. Please sign up on the board if you can help her.

Pedal-Powered Cinema or Music Centre Mark Ashworth and Luke Whiteman have volunteered to plan and run it. They are looking for pedal pushers to make it happen - sign up on the board if you can help.

Storytelling will be happening with the help of “Under the Greenwood Tree”: we need stewards to help with this.

Gift Bank. Have you been given something you don't want or need, which someone else might buy as a present for someone else? Contributions welcome - items must be new or ‘as new’, and an organiser needed for this stall.

There will also be lots of commercial stalls selling things which are ‘Green & Ethical’, and we will welcome offers of help setting up and clearing up for this exciting event.

There are sign up sheets in the entrance lobby for anyone who can help in any way on the day - and please take POSTERS today - they need to give people two weeks notice of the event.

We are forming a children's choir and orchestra for the morning service on Sunday 25 Sept. The choir is open to all children from the age of 7. The orchestra welcomes instrumentalists of all ages and abilities.  A rehearsal will be held from 9:20 on the Sunday Morning in the church. Parish Weekend away 8-10 July

A weekend in the country staying in a lovely country house with full board, a swimming pool, an ice cream parlour, great friends to grow and good youth and children’s work.

That’s a foretaste of our parish weekend away, which again this year is at Pilgrim Hall deep in the heart of the Sussex countryside.

Those who came away last time spoke warmly about the friendships deepened and the learning that took place. And just when you thought it couldn’t be topped, we are delighted to welcome Martin Cavender and his wife Cesca to help lead our weekend – God in the Way. Martin’s ministry at Pentecost was very important to a number of us and I believe that he and ReSource are the right person and the right ministry at the right time in Clapham.

The June Connect focuses on prayer and specifically on the power of prayer to heal.
This month we are delighted to welcome Camilla and Robert Byk back to Holy Trinity Clapham for another practical and inspiring talk. This time they will talk about prayer. How to pray and the power of prayer. They will tell us of their extraordinary experiences of praying to heal people on Balham High Street.

The band will be in good voice, with some great songs all fully amplified on their new sound system - let's raise the roof.

And for those who wish to receive it, there will be Holy Communion, and the ministry of prayer and anointing.

Join us for our 34th COMMON FAYRE - "probably the best Church Fair in London" This coming Saturday, from 11.00am to 5.00pm. There will be lots to see and do... Stalls selling books, CDs, jams, cakes, savouries, plants, bric-a-brac, children's clothes, toys... and commercial and charity stalls, too. Food and drink including hog roast, BBQ, Caribbean food, beer & Pimms, ice cream, candy floss. And all the fun of the fair including live music, donkey rides, bouncy castle, coconut shy, plus Raffle, Tombola, Silent Auction and "Everyone's a Winner"! The Dog Show judging starts at 11am: entries taken on the field from 10am. Come and join us for all or part of the day. Entrance £2, children FREE.

The Big Lunch

On 5th June the Environment Group held a Big Lunch in the churchyard at Holy Trinity and shared a meal with members of the congregation, friends and visitors. People brought delicious homemade dishes to share and also displayed (and ate) the home grown salads they had been growing for the event since we launched our planting workshops at Easter.

The children took part in a Recycled Costume competition which produced some very creative contributions! Prizes were ‘Grow-your-own’ kits donated by Neal’s Nursery in Wandsworth.

James Macmillan at Holy Trinity SUNDAY 8th May at 6.00pm Please join us for a special evening service when we welcome the internationally acclaimed Scottish composer, James Macmillan, as part of our celebration of the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible. He will be interviewed during the service by Noel Tredinnick, Director of Music at All Souls' Langham Place and Professor of Conducting at the Guildhall School of Music. During the service the choir will sing Macmillan's piece "A New Song", based on Psalm 96.

Alpha Course dates for 2011

The dates for this year's Alpha Courses have been confirmed, so put them in your diary now.

The next course will kick off on Tuesday 10th May, and we'll be holding an Autumn course on Tuesday 4th October.

The Alpha Course is a widely used introduction to the Christian faith which provides an opportunity to explore what life is all about.

Each session start with supper followed by a short talk on topics such as ‘Who is Jesus?’, ‘Why and how do I pray?’ and ‘How can I resist evil?’ Then we split up into smaller groups to discuss the talk, bringing our own experiences and questions. You have the freedom to discuss the issues and ask any questions you like.

Home Groups

At Holy Trinity, we want to help everyone respond to Jesus’ call to follow him and become his disciples. Discipleship enables us to connect with God in our daily lives: belonging more fully, believing more deeply and behaving differently. We do this through learning, praying and gathering together.

Home groups are a place where this happens. Small groups of church members meet together on a regular basis in each other’s homes. Our vision is for every member of Holy Trinity to also be a member of a home group. Home Groups are places where we can:

belong and form deep friendships;
care and pray for each other through good times and bad;
read the Bible and help each other put what we learn into practice; and
grow in our relationship with God and be equipped to serve Him.

Home groups are made up of around six to ten people. They usually meet once a week or once a fortnight in someone’s home. There are no rules about what goes on in a home group, but a typical meeting would involve a simple meal, some time reading the bible and discussing it together and prayer.

Holy Trinity Environment Group currently has 6 members and is a sub-committee of the Parochial Church Council. Our mission is to make the stewardship of God’s world a core part of the everyday life of Holy Trinity Clapham. We support the PCC, congregation and community in fulfilling the fifth mark of mission ‘to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth’.

Great Lakes Outreach

Simon and Lizzie Guillebaud are a fourth generation missionary family who have a passion for mission and are prepared to attempt great things for God and expect great things from him. Simon’s Great Lakes Mission in Burundi links him with his forebears in a radical discipleship which seeks nothing less than God’s best purpose for him and the people of Burundi. Called to work in a war-torn nation, Simon has forged a path that requires 100% commitment to God and the people he loves. We are delighted and privileged to welcome Simon to Holy Trinity Clapham this Sunday. He is speaking at 10am and 6pm. Perhaps there’s no better way to introduce Simon than by referring you to the first prayer letter he published this year: Here’s a few questions to ponder as we embark on the year 2010: 1 Will I love the truth enough to live it? 2 Will I choose to live by fear or by faith? And following on from that, 3 Will I choose to play it safe or take risks? The choice is ours, the consequences either way absolutely huge. I long for all of us to love the truth enough to truly live it, by embracing honesty and brokenness and sacrifice and surrender. I long for all of us to choose the freedom of living by faith rather than being shackled by fear. And I long for all of us to choose to step out of our comfort zones and see what God can and will do with someone willing to risk his/her all on the reckless pursuit of the Kingdom of God. Canon Andrew White back in Clapham

Canon Andrew White makes a welcome return to Holy Trinity Church on Sunday 23 May. He is preaching at 10am and speaking at our Connect service at 6pm. Andrew’s ministry in Baghdad is the stuff legends are made of. But the real story is of God at work through his remarkable ministry and the witness of St George’s Church. He can’t be confined anywhere and his itinerant ministry within the Middle East, Europe and America seeking comprehensive solutions to warfare and an end to bloodshed have kept thousands of Christians praying for him and for peace in a place he describes as his first love. Everyone is welcome to both or either services on 23 May. Oh yes, and bring a cheque book please - there will be serious collections at both services for his work! If you had visited the old website, you cannot fail to have noticed that this is rather different! We hope you like the new website. We have retained most of the content from the old website, although we will now be keeping old sermons for a shorter time. The proposals for the development of our Church building have progressed to the next stage. The Parochial Church Council have approved the plans, after extensive consultations with the congregation and external interested organisations. We will now go through the lengthy process of seeking the necessary permissions to make modifications through the local authority and the Church authorities.
